چکیده

We study the complexity of computing Nash equilibria in games where players arranged as the vertices of a graph play a symmetric 2-player game against their neighbours. We call this a pairwise interaction game. We analyse this game for n players with a fixed number of actions and show that (1) a mixed Nash equilibrium can be computed in constant time for any game, (2) a pure Nash equilibrium can be computed through Nash dynamics in polynomial time for games with symmetrisable payoff matrix, (3) determining whether a pure Nash equilibrium exists for zero-sum games is NP-complete, and (4) counting pure Nash equilibria is #P-complete even for 2-strategy games. In proving (3), we define a new defective graph colouring problem called Nash colouring, which is of independent interest, and prove that its decision version is NP-complete. Finally, we show that pairwise interaction games form a proper subclass of the usual graphical games.

From pairwise to group interactions in games of cyclic dominance.

We study the rock-paper-scissors game in structured populations, where the invasion rates determine individual payoffs that govern the process of strategy change. The traditional version of the game is recovered if the payoffs for each potential invasion stem from a single pairwise interaction. However, the transformation of invasion rates to payoffs also allows the usage of larger interaction ...

Dynamic Properties of Evolutionary Multi-player Games in Finite Populations

William D. Hamilton famously stated that “human life is a many person game and not just a disjoined collection of two person games”. However, most of the theoretical results in evolutionary game theory have been developed for two player games. In spite of a multitude of examples ranging from humans to bacteria, multi-player games have received less attention than pairwise games due to their inh...

Pairwise comparison dynamics for games with continuous strategy space

This paper studies pairwise comparison dynamics for population games with continuous strategy space. We show that the pairwise comparison dynamic is well-defined if certain mild Lipschitz continuity conditions are satisfied. We establish Nash stationarity and positive correlation for pairwise comparison dynamics. Finally, we prove global convergence and local stability under general determinist...

"You're It!": Role Identification Using Pairwise Interactions in Tag Games

We aim at designing interactive playgrounds that automatically analyze the behavior of children while playing games, in order to adapt the gameplay and make the games more engaging. In this paper, we focus on recognizing roles in tag games, where children are taggers or runners. We start by tracking the location and motion of individual players, and subsequently recognize pairwise interactions:...

Partial bandwagon effects and local interactions

We consider partial bandwagon properties in the context of coordination games to capture the idea of weak network externalities. We then study a local interactions model where agents play a coordination game following a noisy best-reply process. We identify conditions such that Globally Pairwise Risk Dominant strategies are selected. Examples include arbitrary 3× 3 coordination games and n×n su...
